Congresswoman Ann Wagner Visits Heartland Industries
U.S. Congresswoman Ann Wagner of Missouri’s 2nd District recently visited Heartland Industries in St. Louis for a tour and discussion regarding the critical role extended employment sheltered workshops have in providing employment choice for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and the importance of protecting 14(c) certificates.During the tour, Congresswoman Wagner interacted with many of Heartland’s 170-plus employees and staff. She noted that it was clear how much the employees enjoyed working at Heartland where they could perform to their highest abilities in a safe, dignified, and supportive environment while also being among friends and companions. Employees were excited to demonstrate the work they were doing and expressed to her how “fun” it was to work at Hearlland.
During discussions following the tour, Congresswoman Wagner commented about the unfortunate reality that the vast majority of those who wish to phase out 14(c) certificates and shut down the sheltered workshop industry have never visited a workshop.
She reinforced her view that workshops provide purpose, meaning, and a strong sense of self-worth to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who have not succeeded or are not candidates for jobs in competitive integrated employment (CIE). She was adamant that individuals with IDD need more choices and options, not less.
Everyone at Heartland wish to express our sincere thanks to Congresswoman Wagner for taking the time to visit and encourage them with her message of strong and committed support for the workshop and all sheltered workshops throughout the United States.
