Board Votes to Hold September Meeting Via ZOOM

The MASWM Board of Directors voted to cancel the in-person Fall Conference scheduled in Branson Sept. 26-28 and hold sessions exclusively via ZOOM videoconferencing.

In a special meeting Aug. 23, board members agreed the decision was unfortunate, but too many variables and concerns exist in order to hold an in-person meeting.

“I think we all want to see each other,” retiring member Susan Trump noted. “But we’ve got an awful lot of people that we’re responsible for. If you’re one of the shops that had a death, that breaks your heart. I think bottom line is we need to err on the side of caution.”

The decision was not easy. The board had polled all 86 member managers and received responses from 60. The result was a nearly 50-50 division between those for in-person meeting and those for videoconferencing only.

Additionally, an issue involved meeting the hotel’s minimum room registrations with many workshop managers and staff possibly unable to attend because of shop staffing shortages. Another issue involved the challenges of trying to conduct a hybrid meeting that could stream video for virtual participants, even if some attend in person.

“It’s a tough call,” President Rob Libera said. “I know that all of us were really looking forward to getting together.”

Two months ago, the downward trend for cases was encouraging, but Branson, where the conference was to be located, is currently still a significant Missouri hotspot. The Hilton promenade worked with MASWM and agreed to waive cancellation charges in exchange for scheduling next year with them.

In the end, board members voted unanimously to hold the meeting by ZOOM videoconferencing. The planning committee will revise the agenda with training sessions to include 14 C, SSDI and employee training, as well as break-out sessions by Area. The conference will still be loaded with valuable information for the workshops.
