Monroe City Sheltered Workshop Receives Grant Funding for Recycling Equipment

State and county officials recently joined Monroe City Workshop staff to celebrate the award of two special grants to the shop. Those present included (from left)  Missouri 18th District Senator Cindy O'Laughlin, Monroe County Presiding Commissioner Mike Minor, Mark Twain Solid Waste Planner Ashley Long, workshop Manager Connie Thurman and workshop Board Treasurer Regina Miskell.

Monroe City Sheltered Workshop was recently awarded funding from two special grants for 2021.

The Workshop applied for Solid Waste Grant funding through the Mark Twain Solid Waste Management District. They were awarded $ 73,521 in Solid Waste Grant funding for the purchase of a horizontal baler and $23,580 in grant funding for the purchase of a densifier baler. The horizontal Baler will help the workshop with the recycling of plastics and metals, while the Densifier Baler will focus on aluminum recycling.

The new equipment will offer the workshop a more effective way to bale their recyclables while saving space and increasing turnaround time. "The Mark Twain Solid Waste District is always eager to work with Sheltered Workshops in our district to provide equipment that aids in their recycling efforts,” said Ashley Long, district planner for the Mark Twain Solid Waste Management District. "The workshops offer a great service to our communities."

The Mark Twain Solid Waste Management District is funded by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and governed by an Executive Board of County Commissioners from the seven-county region, including Monroe County Commissioner Mike Minor. Administration for the District is provided by the Mark Twain Regional Council of Governments located in Perry. This grant was partly funded by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in conjunction with the Mark Twain Solid Waste Management District and the Monroe City Sheltered Workshop.
